Today started with me sleeping in till after 10am, and it felt wonderful! The plan was to do a full day of Father Brown on Netflix because they said it was leaving after today, but tragically, they had taken it down already, so we lost out on the chance to get more caught up. Not gonna lie, I feel a bit lied to. "Ends March 31st" generally means at the end of the day on March 31st, not the beginning of the day. Sigh, oh well, we'll have to get it from the library when they're open again.
Farewell, for now, Kembleford, and all the quaint and quirky inhabitants. I will see you again!
Plan B was Supernatural. We finished season 13 and have started season 14 instead. Since they only have through this season on Netflix available, and season 15's end has been delayed cuz of coronavirus, I'm going to have to wait for some time to watch the last season. I need to start thinking about what to watch next. A rewatch maybe? Lost? Buffy? Charmed? ER? A brand new show? If so, which?
Did a few chores today. My foot felt good enough for me to gather the compost and recycling and take it out. Each day it's little better, but still not enough to go for a walk. My sister got a new shelf and cleared out one of her old ones that we moved to my room. There was just enough space to put it in my room and I was able to empty out the last container of books which have been sitting on my floor. It looks so much better now! I finished my scanning today and continued to organize my desk. There's still work to be done there, but I've made a lot of progress. Once I can move the scanner and its stand away from my desk I'll be able to get everything set up the way I want it.
We had a nice hail/rain/thunderstorm this afternoon. It's been so cold recently, I'm not surprised. It got so dark this afternoon that I could tell something was on the way. It was fun to watch!
We thought about doing Takeout Tuesday, but decided that if we could be good and eat our own food all week, we'd get takeout on Friday after venturing to the store for the first time in two weeks. I have a sizable list going so far.
Leftovers, but with a chicken burger instead for the entree. Grape fruit roll-up for dessert.
Welcome to Silver and Shadow

This is a blog I will be using for topics other than food. Politics, religion, spirituality, humor, green living, anything that I want to talk about that doesn't fall under the food/cooking category.

STFAH: Day 8
My foot looks like it got run over by a car, but the pain is getting better. If this keeps up, I might be able to walk with shoes on outside for a while! But we'll see. I might start walking slowly on the treadmill instead to work on strengthening it and my knees again.
I organized the last box by my desk that's been in the way, and broke it down to recycle. I have a giant mess on my desk now, but once the scanning is done, I'll be able to work on organizing it more. Also organized the giant bag of leftover containers. Got rid of anything that didn't have both a lid and a body, and also the ones we don't use that often. Space is an issue here, so we have to make sure we're only keeping what we actually use. Little by little, it's getting there...
More Father Brown today. Made it to season 4 so far. We only have it through tomorrow so I hope I can get through it all one last time!
Ham, au gratin potatoes, roast asparagus, and crescent rolls for dinner tonight. I learned the hard way: canned ham = NO. Just don't, unless you like eating a salt lick for dinner. Tomorrow I'll eat the rest of everything else with a chicken burger instead.
Nothing too major happened otherwise today. Just a low key day!

STFAH: Day 7
Well, today was really exciting! I ventured out of the apartment to help take out the garbage and recycling. I'm still hobbling around on my foot, but I could get that far today. And I did some baking and we tried out our new mini heart-shape waffle maker, delicious!
I had apples that were getting mushy so I needed to use them up. This recipe was from an Amish cookbook and it looks really pretty and smells amazing! Sadly, it's a little bland and dry. I wish I had Cool Whip/whipped cream/vanilla ice cream to go with it, that would have helped a lot. Unfortunately, I have none of those things. Ah well, I'll eat what I can. It was fun to make it, if nothing else!
I also placed an order with Market Spice, the spice/tea shop at the Pike Place Market. The only way they can be in business right now, is through the mail. I got four different things, and with shipping/handling, it came to just about $20! Not bad at all! I'll take pictures and show you what I got when it arrives in the mail. I figure since I'm still being paid during this time, I can make some purchases like this to help out local businesses, until my own crunch-time kicks in in May, depending on what happens with work.
Did a load of laundry, and had a massive Father Brown marathon courtesy of Netflix. Sadly, the show is leaving at the end of the month, so we wanted to try to get through it one last time. It's the first show we started streaming last year when we switched from disc to streaming Netflix.
Scanning papers still, working on some genealogy paperwork and ran across my grandfather's WW2 ration book and a newspaper from December 7, 1941, announcing the attack on Pearl Harbor. I will NOT be getting rid of those!
Delish chicken burger for dinner tonight. Used up the last of my chopped tomatoes and guacamole from last week's tacos. Also sauteed up the rest of my mushrooms that were on their last legs and added them to the burger. Quite tasty!

STFAH: Day 6
I'm still dealing with my foot, though the swelling is turning more into one gigantic bruise. While still painful, it means it's moving in the right direction. I'm guessing I'll be able to putter around the apartment in the next day or two more easily, but I'm probably looking at at least another week before I can start properly walking again.
Today's fun outing was to the Dairy Queen in Woodinville and then to pick up something from my parents' house in Bothell. Some Supernatural, some reading in bed elevating my foot, a nice long, hot shower, and scanning photographs while watching Father Brown rounded out my day.
The big news on the COVID-19 front, is the fact that the US Army is building a temporary hospital outside of Century Link field for non-coronavirus patients. Do you realize what this is? It's a freaking MASH unit. Like the show. Like, we live in a world now when peacetime first world country cities have MASH units in them. For real. I cannot wrap my mind around it, but it's also making me want to rewatch the show. What the doctors and nurses are going through now is obviously not the same as what they went through during the Korean War, but it does seem somewhat on the same level of anxiety and trauma they must be experiencing.
Hopefully we won't have any Frank Burns's there. We've already got one in the White House and one is far more than enough right now...

STFAH: Day 5
Today I didn't leave the apartment at all. Fell down the youtube rabbit hole for a few hours. No nap, though I did lay in bed elevating my foot and reading for a few hours. I finished a book. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Not an actual autobiography, and lots of the n-word, like loooootttttssss. But worth the read for a feel of what life after slavery ended must have been like. Then I started a new one. We'll see what it's like...
Taco leftovers for dinner and some break and bake peanut butter cookies for dessert. Mailed out my new address and phone number to my family. Some Supernatural episodes and then lots of Father Brown tonight.
Spent time on twitter tweeting about Trump leaving our state and Michigan to die in all this because our governors don't kiss his ass enough. That man should be removed from office over this. And not in November, now! And now, off to track down some articles to help a friend explain to somebody who chooses not to understand why it's not ok to be an anti-Asian racist asshat during this time...Wish me luck!

STFAH: Day 4
Once again, my foot thwarted my efforts to do anything healthful. I have rediagnosed my foot issue as not a bruise, but a sprain. I've been doing all the things you're supposed to do with a sprain, and after spending a couple hours in bed this afternoon elevating it, I feel like it may have turned a bit of a corner. I can gently massage it, the way I did my knee, and it's less painful to put my foot down on the floor, though I still can't really put my weight on it. This morning the idea of icing my foot sounded so painful I kept putting it off, but I eventually did it anyway. I'm icing it now too and it actually feels really good on it!
Today we drove to the zoo to test out how to get there from our new neighborhood. Picked up Burger King drive-thru on the way back. Read in bed for a while and then napped. Nice hot shower. I suspect I'll still sleep pretty well tonight. Pain seems to zap energy from me, and hopefully it'll help to get a good night's sleep with my foot elevated again. This week is a loss for exercise, but maybe by next week I'll be ready for slow walking on the treadmill.
I tried two of my sweet treats today. Strawberry poki sticks. Did not care for them. Too cloyingly sweet. And these:

White chocolate "Funny Mushrooms". These are nom! They're super cute! I'd never seen them before we stopped by our local Asian market a couple weeks ago. They have different kinds of chocolate but since I only eat white chocolate, I was excited to see these! If you ever see these in a store, grab them, you will not be disappointed!
Tacos for dinner. Made homemade guacamole. Switched from Supernatural tonight to Father Brown since SPN's getting pretty dark right now and we need a break. Father Brown might be a murder mystery, but it's just homey and wonderful! It's on Netflix if you have that and are looking for something new to try.

STFAH: Day 3
So, today didn't go as planned, but I decided to just give in to it and honor what my body and mind were demanding. My hurt toe from yesterday is even worse and leaving me hobbling around. A long walk outside was out of the question, as was walking on the treadmill. I've iced it, heated it, and elevated it, and even with ibuprofen it's still too stiff and painful to walk normally.
I lounged in bed for a while because I was afraid of walking more than I needed to, and then we decided to go for a drive to get out of the apartment for a while. We found our way to the U Village, which is much closer to Lake City than Crown Hill. We stopped by Blazing Bagels and picked up lunch to go. Quite tasty!
Supernatural on Netflix, a load of dishes by hand, reading in bed with my foot elevated and a bit of a nap were the highlights of the day. We'll see how well I sleep tonight with a nap and no exercise today, but I've been so tired lately from the stress and anxiety of the move and I finally feel refreshed for once.
I hope everybody else is getting through this time ok! Hopefully my toe will be better soon and I can get back into walking again. It's just so silly that I mess up my toe pretty much the day my knee is recovered enough to start walking again. It's really not fun!

STFAH: Day 2
Oh, what a thrilling day it was! I woke up with my bad toe hurting for the first time in a long time and thought maybe it was the change in the weather. It does that sometime, but the red marks on the skin indicate bruising of some sort. How did I do this?! I'm just starting to get back into walking after wrecking my knee again and now this??? Seriously?!
I didn't do as well with writing today, I wasn't feeling it as much today, but I wrote a few paragraphs. Better than nothing. Got some more reading done, watched a few episodes of Supernatural and watched Mary Poppins Returns. The highlight of the day was the outdoors walk. We walked the opposite direction for a good long(slow cuz of my foot and knee) walk in an area that is less populated so we were pretty much the only people out and about. We stopped by a teriyaki place on the way back to support a small local business since today is Take-Out Tuesday and we're supposed to support local restaurants at this time. Once I get to know the menus in this area I'll call in orders because it's still too cramped inside and it's hard to maintain 6 feet distance from everybody else. The food was awesome, though. We ate it back at the apartment. I will be back for more!
I was just a little lazier today, not much unpacking, though I did switch out my autumn/winter work shirts with my spring/summer work shirts. Did a last load of laundry to get the stuff that has to air-dry done. Now I have a lovely wooden hanging thing in my room covered in drying shirts. I did the treadmill again and finished the Batman episode. It was Mr. Freeze.
Hopefully my foot will be better tomorrow because I really love the outside walk. It's definitely keeping my sane! Trying a new 10pm show tonight cuz why not. Hopefully it'll be good!

STFAH: Day 1
So, I'm starting a new series to record my life during these bonkers times of Covid-19. Today is Day 1 of STFAH, or Staying The F--- At Home!
Here was my general schedule for the day: Woke up 7:30am. Got ready for the day, got breakfast ready. 8:30am ate breakfast, caught up with social media. 9am to 11am: worked on my writing. Writing a Galahad chapter I am going to insert into the rest of the book. 11am(ish) to about noon: Walked around my new neighborhood. Not too many people out. Stopped at Kaffeeklastch and got a pretzel and rugelach to try. Very tasty! Noon-1:30pm(ish): Unpacking and organizing the kitchen equipment, lunch prep. 1:30-2:00: lunch. Then the afternoon kind of flew by in a flurry of cleaning the kitchen, doing a batch of dishes by-hand and trying out the dishwasher(nice and quiet!). Did a couple episodes of Supernatural, read in my bedroom by the window. There are some very pretty trees to look at, and the sky was so lovely. Did a load of laundry, walked on the treadmill to an episode of Batman, took out the garbage and recycling, and showered. Made a batch of spaghetti sauce, which is delish!
Other items of note: We set up our Roku and now are the proud owners of a subscription to Disney Plus! First movie we're watching: Mary Poppins. Main project to start working on: Scanning. So much stuff I want to have a record of, but don't need to keep the physical object. Thank goodness I have a long history with document imaging! Another project: I have a pie shell, and too many apples. Need to try one of my apple pie recipes. Maybe I'll call it Dean Winchester Apple Pie...Also? The dryer at my new place is really loud. I know it's coming, but it makes me jump every single time!
I'm trying to stay on a schedule and do things like eat the same types of foods for lunch and breakfast that I do at work. This will help me maintain my sanity during this time. Outside time is important too. Going to try for 30 minutes/day minimum. Now that we're all under the "stay at home" order in this state, it's going to be important to keep this pace going.
