Today was a nice day. I did my usual "new routine," though I didn't do any writing for my book. My order from Buddha Bath at the Pike Place Market came and the soaps smell amazing! One for me, and one for my mom for Mother's Day. I did a load of dishes in the dishwasher, and swept the bathroom.
The majority of my day, though, we spent in thought about Ahmaud Arbery's murder, and white supremacy and the role it plays in the country. I wrote a FB post, and tweeted it, and engaged in a conversation with a friend about it. She recommended a documentary that I had been thinking of watching but hadn't yet, and I decided to put off my Alphabet Movie for the day and watch it instead. Thankfully, the two streaming services I downloaded for free through the library, had it, and I was able to immediately download and watch it.
2016's I Am Not Your Negro, is a documentary based on the writings of James Baldwin. It came highly recommended, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Drop what you're doing, find it somewhere, and watch it. It's on Hoopla if you have that streaming service. And if you don't have it, get it.
I was struck at how uneducated I still am with dismantling my white supremacy and white privilege. It's going to take the rest of my life, and I don't even really know where to start. I decided to make a list of people to research, books to read, and events to study up on. I have a few books at home now that I dug up, and will start with now, but I'll get more when the libraries reopen.
The documentary uses writings and film footage of James Baldwin to showcase how hypocritical white people, yes, even us lefty liberals, are. Some of the favorite movies we pat ourselves on the back for, are looked at through a white lens, but if you look at it through the eyes of people of color, you see a whole different message. And the patting of our backs when Obama was elected after 400+ years of African Americans being in this country, rings hollow as well. It's accusatory, but mindblowingly so. It's so well done.
We don't see our privilege and often do things for approval and reassurance that we aren't terrible people. We then place that burden on people of color to reassure us that we are definitely not terrible people. This is something we need to stop doing. We dismantle white supremacy because it's the right thing to do, not because it makes us so amazing and way more caring than those other white people.
A couple other points came to me when I watched this. This is something I've discussed with others elsewhere, but this documentary brought it up again. We need to stop with the shock. "What? How is this happening in 2020? This is not America." I'm sorry to tell you, it is America. It's always been America. We might feel shocked and dismayed when we see the constant and continual violence perpetrated by white people on black and brown people in this nation, but we need to keep it to ourselves. Saying these types of things when we hear these stories is actually a microaggression. It forces people of color to prove to us this does in fact still happen. They have to soften the blow and break it to us and our sensitive feelings that yes, they still do have to deal with this. Just accept that this is America, it is 2020, and this still happens on a nearly daily basis, and move on to supporting people of color instead of expecting them to support you.
The other issue we need to deal with is: Ask yourself why it is white people who are the ones who always ask why people bring race into something. Every single time this line is brought into a conversation, it's the white person. What makes you so uncomfortable to know that race does play a role in this world? We need to stop buying into the "I don't see race" thing, because you do see it, and you know it, and you need to just start acknowledging it. Until you acknowledge it, you will never be able to admit that you receive benefits from our white supremacist system just by the mere fact that you have white skin.
By the time the documentary was over, I was feeling really humbled and emotional and I decided to go for my walk to just be in my feelings about it. I was thinking that it's sad that I can go outside on my walk with my mask on the whole time and nobody would think anything of it. Ahmaud Armery was not given that privilege, and I was sort of dedicating my walk to him.
As if to prove my point, something I couldn't have planned better if I'd tried, happened. I had my mask on, and was stepping into the street to start my walk, when a cop car drove by me. There were two cops in the car and I saw them, but they didn't even look at me as they drove past and turned the corner to turn around and park by what turned out to be a second cop car. I stared at both the cars as I walked down the middle of the street, with my mask on, and was completely ignored. Ahmaud Arbery is murdered while out on a run because he was black, and I'm seen as safe and a non-threat, with a mask on, walking in the street, because I'm white. I was outraged. I got to a stopping point before taking out my phone and texting myself this moment to remember, because it matters.
When I got around the corner, another thought came to me that I also emailed to myself. White people need to start noticing these moments. Witnessing how we're overlooked when a person of color would not be overlooked. Ask yourself why you were overlooked, and then start looking around for instances where a person of color isn't overlooked, and ask yourself why. And then start speaking up and speaking out against it. Start telling people. Tweet it, blog it, FB message it. Write to your local newspaper. Vote for candidates who speak out against things like this. Because, we all know nothing will happen in this country until white people are either victimized by it themselves, or have decided they care about it now. It's our job to make white people care about this, but to do that, we have to start with ourselves.
I know I probably annoy people or upset them by constantly talking about racism and white supremacy in this country. I probably sound like a broken record and you think to yourself, "OMG, there she goes again." But I don't care. And I'm not sorry. Every time you're irritated by me bringing it up, just be glad you're merely irritated by talk of it, and not living the effects of actual racism and white supremacy.
And tonight there's news that Ahmaud's murderers have been arrested and I hope that they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and spend the rest of their lives in prison. I will be keeping track of this story. And in the meantime, watch that documentary! It should be mandatory viewing by every white person in this country.

STFAH: Day 45
Today was another pretty good day. Nothing too exciting happened, it was just nice. I have been getting up with enough time in the morning to watch The Golden Girls, which is always a great way to start the day. I really felt like I could have done another walk outside today, but I still need to do every other day at least for this week after the set-back I had a few days ago. I made the mistake of sleeping with socks on my feet that were too tight and they ended up curled up all night long and set off tendon pain for a few days. It actually messed up both feet, so those socks will be added to the Goodwill pile.
I managed some writing today and I think I'm finally to the point where I'll be able to type out what I've handwritten and then finish the chapter on the computer. It's exciting! One of the other things I did today was work on the IOUs. My sister and I split rent and bills and lately, grocery and takeout receipts since the best way to get in/out of stores is paying everything in one transaction and figuring out the bill later. Well, later was today!
Today's dinner was the last of the pork chops, the red potatoes that had sprouted and needed to be used up, and other veggies turned into stew. It was really good! Don't worry, I cut out all the potato sprouts first. The original plan was to use the russets, but the reds needed to be used up asap. I also discovered my yellow bell pepper and three tomatoes need to be used up very soon too, so I'm going to find a recipe or two to use them with. We'll see what I come up with. Salsa or pasta sauce feels too obvious, but who knows.
Today's Alphabet Movie letter was W, so I had a few more options, but I went with one I saw the other day thinking it was V but it was just W written oddly to look like two V's. 2015's The Witch.
It's actually The Witch, not the VVitch...It's a horror movie, which I generally don't do, but it was more of the thinky horror than the slasher horror, though there was some slashing involved. It took from New England stories of the Puritans and the Witch trials, etc, and then played right into all the witchy stereotypes. Apparently Satan is a goat??? And witches are his minion-wives??? See, this is what I don't get, and I had a discussion with a friend about this once. These low-level demons are basically crap cuz they go after one family or one village and wreak havoc on them. But where's their vision? If they're so pro-Satan, why aren't they aiming higher? Terrorizing a few people might be fun for a while, but it doesn't really get maximum results, ie, new followers. This is how you can tell it's all just people letting their imaginations run away with them. It's ultimately just silly. And yet, no, I still will not be watching The Exorcist any time soon, thank you very much. I'm not gonna tempt fate...! Satan and his minions can stay the f--- away from me!

STFAH: Day 44
Nothing terribly exciting happened today but it was a nice day anyway. I started off by doing one item from my to-do list. I paid my tithe for March and April. I was able to do it online, so that was nice. I watched some videos on Youtube, did a couple episodes of Black Lightning, and watched my movie for the day.
One of the good things that happened was my Kukuruza popcorn order arrived. They had a great deal a couple weeks back that my sister and I split in order to help support them. They have amazing popcorn! I can't wait to start eating it.
The other highlight of the day was my walk. The city closed off the street up from ours as one of the streets in the city where you can walk 24/7 without worrying about cars. It allows for better social distancing when people can walk in the street and aren't stuck only on the sidewalks. It was so warm and sunny and just gorgeous today! My foot was having a tough day yesterday but was better by today. The walk felt so good, and my leg muscles felt better too. I haven't been able to walk around the new neighborhood much because I've been injured and don't know my way around too well yet. I got a little lost, but knew the general direction I needed to get back home. It was nice to have the luxury to get out of the house for a while and just wander around. I found this cut through that reminded me of the White Way of Delight from the Anne of Green Gables books. At least until I saw the creepy guy randomly sitting in the grass by a fence. Nothing happened, he didn't even seem to notice me, but it did mar the moment a bit. I finished off the delightful walk with a lovely shower when I got back home.
I wasn't able to find a V movie in the category I've been using so I had to go to the general search function and see what they had under V. I found a cute romcom from 2010 called Valentine's Day.
It's a Garry Marshall film and has a lot of people from the Princess Diaries movies that he did. It also has just about every famous person from 2010 in it. I'm honestly shocked that it had such a huge cast of really big names. It's cute, if you like romcoms. I found it amusing and a good way to spend an afternoon.
No tacos for me today, dinner was leftover pork chops and potatoes. Very tasty!

STFAH: Day 43
Today was a pretty good day, in spite of a sore neck which led to a headache and some nausea. I need to switch back to my old pillow because I'm just not adjusting to my new pillow. It's been over two months, I should have adjusted to it by now. I did manage to go to bed at 11pm last night and I turned off the light before midnight, which is a record for me these days! It's still going to take some work before I'm back under control.
Today my coworker texted me a picture of the Harry Potter calendar from my office. She must have had to go in to scan photos, but it gave me a sense of hope that there will be enough work one day for me to come back, and also a sense of jealousy that she got to do some work today!! Sigh, one day, one day...
I took out the garbage, compost, and recycling today and somebody had put a plastic bag with a metal twisty tie for compost. I was compelled to tear the bag open and dump out the compost. That would ruin the entire batch if it went through that way. I can't let that happen if I had the chance to fix it. Then I had to carry the dirty bag to the garbage and throw it away. But then I noticed somebody had dumped a bunch of magazines by the recycling, but not in it, so I sifted through them and found a bunch of food magazines with recipes to go through! They're currently sitting in three day quarantine before I'll go through them. I washed up very well when I got back from that little adventure!
I also got a bunch of last minute Safeway Monopoly tickets from my mom and the ones from the store to go through. The ticket part ends tomorrow, but the coupons that go with them go through most of this month. I have one last day to maybe win something...!
I only wrote a few sentences today, but I wrote, and that's what matters.
Tonight's dinner was a delicious traditional pork chop dinner. It was the first time I used the electric skillet at the new place. It turned out great. Leftovers tomorrow.
Today's Alphabet Movie letter was U, and my choices were limited. I ended up with a movie from 2013 called Under the Skin.
It was sort of an artsy-fartsy movie that made me say, "What the hell?" pretty much the entire time. There's not a huge plot, not much actually happening, a lot of quiet screen time, and then it all just sort of ends. Lots of nudity, if that's an issue for you. Not for kids. Really not my thing, but I'm reaching the dregs of the alphabet so beggars can't really be choosers!

STFAH: Day 42
Today was grocery shopping day. We did two stores, Safeway and Fred Meyer. Got most of the stuff on our lists, but they're still out of certain items. Baking products are still hard to find. I bought the world's most expensive bag of almond flour so I could experiment with French macarons sometime soon. Maybe sometime this week. I also got a good deal on a copy of Knives Out so I'll be having fun with that one soon. I loved that movie so much!
The rest of the day consisted of a shower, two loads of laundry, and three more MCU movies: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther. That one is still one of my favorite MCU movies. It's just so good!
We found out today that certain Goodwill stores will be opening soon so I'm going to try to spend some time really evaluating what's in our "give away" pile to make sure I can't use anything anywhere else or see if anybody else wants before I finalize it and hopefully we can free up that space soon! I'll be able to use the treadmill again as soon as that stuff is gone. I can't wait!
My water challenge went pretty well this week. I may not make my goal today but the grocery shopping cut into the first half of my day. I want to work on my sleeping this week. It's pretty typical of me to let myself get out of hand with sleep. Staying up too late, not getting enough sleep, etc, and now that I'm not working or leaving the house much, there hasn't been much reason or motivation to go to bed at a decent time and get up at a decent time. But I can feel it starting to take its toll on me and I need to start working on getting it under control. One day I will be going back to work and I'll need to have it under control by then. I might as well start now. My goal this week will be computer off by 11pm and then get ready for bed and reading in bed till I fall asleep. I have my alarm set for 9am, which should be plenty of time. It's after my sister goes to work so I won't interfere with her morning schedule and will give her a little bit of time alone without me around. I think that's important during this time, alone time when we can't do much except hand out at home most of the time.
This week should be pretty tough for movies. Tomorrow might not be so hard, with T, but I might not have many choices for the other letters. We'll see what I can come up with!

STFAH: Day 41
Lazy, lazy Saturday today, but that's ok cuz it's the weekend! Lounged around and watched stuff on Youtube and then we switched over to our MCU rewatch. We've gotten through Captain America: Civil War, Dr. Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2 so far. I don't think we have time for another movie tonight so we'll do more tomorrow after we get home from grocery shopping tomorrow.
Today my cousin's boyfriend stopped by to drop off some Safeway Monopoly tickets for us since they're not playing and we are. It was nice to see a relative even if only for a couple minutes. I wore a mask and we were outside, so it was pretty safe social-distance-wise. We didn't win anything, but we have a lot of coupons and instant win tickets to get some free food tomorrow, so that'll be nice.
Dinner tonight was breakfast for dinner and it was delish! I ate so much French toast and I don't regret any of it. I was going to make muffins today but I decided not to. Just didn't feel like it. Sometime next week we might stop by our parents to get some stuff and drop some stuff off, so I might make them then to be able to share them.
In the new-apartment front, we hung up some posters in our living room today, and I think they look fun!
You can see Shawn Spencer on the tv screen. We're finishing out the evening with an episode in our rewatch. And you can also see Freddie Flamingo's head. The two matching shelves with books? Those are all the Baby-Sitters Club books that I saved all my life and I am so lucky to have space to put them all out on display cuz they deserve to be seen!
I also put off doing dishes all week, and for some reason, Saturday night seemed like just the perfect time to do them, so I did the majority of those tonight too. Not a terribly exciting day, but it was nice, and that's all that matters!

STFAH: Day 40
40 days and 40 nights...I haven't been fasting in a desert, but I bet fasting in a desert is actually more interesting than my life has been. I'm kidding! It actually haven't been too bad. Sure I hit a bit of a wall yesterday, but I bounced back today. What did I do to get myself started off better than yesterday? I set my alarm clock and got up at 9am. I'm hoping it'll make me more tired at night so I got to sleep a bit earlier too. I mean, eventually I'll return to work and have to return to a normal schedule. I'll do better if I'm already on a regular schedule before that time.
I did my usual new routine of Youtube videos, Black Lighting episodes on Netflix, then my movie of the day. We planned a big Red Robin dinner so I ate light all day to leave more room for that. We ended up doing a trip to Bartell's as well prior to picking up dinner, so I was able to get a bunch of stuff from my shopping list for Sunday purchased today. This will mean less time in a busier grocery store, which is nice.
I tried a new activity today. I bought a package of origami paper from Powell's bookstore in Portland to support them during this time, at the same time that I bought the sudoku puzzle book. I looked up how to make an origami flamingo, cuz I love flamingos so much, but it turns out that's way too hard for an origami beginner. I ended up making what the website called pelicans, but I think they look more like swans to me. Take a look and let me know what kind of birds they look like to you.
I need to come up with names for them. Since we don't have any pets anymore, I'm just gonna make a bunch of origami animals and I don't have the heart to recycle them, so I'll make an origami animal zoo, maybe.
It turns out that origami is really hard! I need a lot more practice before I try the flamingo again, but I am determined to make one sometime.
Today's Red Robin dinner consisted of my favorite teriyaki chicken burger and fries, onion rings, and strawberry lemonade and it was all sooooo delicious! Now that we live closer to the mall it's easier to go there more often. We've been doing really well about not going out to eat too often, maybe one meal on the weekend, so sometimes getting takeout is such a nice treat! It's easy to take for granted in normal times, but in times like these, it's really special.
I managed to write a little bit today. Next week I should get to the point where I can type up what I have and live-write the rest of the chapter.
Today's Alphabet Movie letter was T, and I chose the 1990 cinematic treasure, Tremors.
I always thought this movie was a horror movie, so I avoided it, but it turns out it's just a horrible movie. I mean, I know it's listed as a comedy, so it's probably poking fun at the genre, but it's just a bad movie. One fun point of interest: It's got the little girl from Jurassic Park in it. Also a very young Reba McIntyre long before her sitcom. But I would say this is safe to skip if you're never seen it unless you're in the mood for a really cheesy movie!
